Color Your World with Mindfulness

Color is a big part of being able to experience life to the fullest.

Color helps us engage with our environment through a sensory experience.

This world in which we move and relate — is full of color.

But it’s one of those things that we take for granted, and forget to pay attention too.

It falls so far into the background, that we no longer even notice all of the myriad colors that surround us.

In mindfulness, the "beginner‘s mind" is about approaching things as if you’re seeing them for the first time. It’s dropping our expectations and preconceived ideas about the thing, and seeing it with an open mind, fresh eyes, just like a beginner.

Imagine a small child entering the world, fascinated by the whole sensory experience of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

When we can begin to see color in this way again, through the beginners mind. In this practice, color becomes so much more vibrant and interesting, and we get more curious and involved in the otherwise mundane experience of our day-to-day life.

We rely heavily on our sense of sight, making it a powerful tool for the cultivation of mindfulness.

You can do this practice anywhere.

You may be sitting at your desk, taking a ride on the bus, or walking down the street.

So I invite you to this mindfulness practice where we can notice color and appreciate it and allow it to re-enter our lives from this beginners mind.

Give yourself a few minutes to experience this for yourself in the below practice.

The Practice:

  • Start by taking a few mindful breaths, feel the body where it is, and allow your energy to settle. Arrive in the present moment.

  • Look around you with fresh eyes, as if you don’t know what to expect, as if you have never seen this world and its objects before, like you are new here on this planet.

  • Really look at the details that you might not normally notice, like shapes, and tones and reflections of light and shadow

  • Look at it with beginner’s mind, as if you have never seen this thing before.

  • Note what it is and its size and shape.

  • After a few moments, look for something else that is this color.

  • Observe this object in the same way.

  • Continuing with this practice, notice when your mind wanders off.

  • You can always return to the sensation of breathing, using the breath as the anchor for your awareness.

  • You may find it helpful to mentally note exactly what you are seeing.

  • For example, a red stop sign doesn’t get labeled “red stop sign”; it becomes “red, octagon, writing, metal.”

  • You truly notice the textures, and pay close attention as if you don’t already know what other colors are available in the world. Everything seems new, perhaps even full of wonder.

  • You don’t take anything for granted, and appreciate every color as a gift. It’s temporary, fleeting, and precious. No two colors are exactly the same.

  • As you can see, this practice of beginner’s mind transforms the way you see the world.

Color is one of those things that you don’t have to work for it’s there for you to appreciate if you are willing and open to just noticing its presence.

Each of my collections is inspired by a color palette. The way I see color is because I am so visual the way I see color is a full body experience I can even feel the color and what it feels like and my feelings have color on the way I feel.

And notice what the color might feel like for you or what a feeling might look like if you can when you can start to cross the senses like what colors is the song when you listen to a song like what colors do you see and If it’s nothing to start that’s fine but I will give you.

Color Your World

The world is full of different colors, and you can practice mindfulness by paying attention to which ones you are seeing in the present moment.

Seeing is a different experience from tuning in to the breath or body, but it offers the same opportunity to be deeply present.Wherever you decide to do this practice, set aside 10 minutes to dedicate yourself to it.

Arrive in the present moment.

Pick one color to focus on.

You may try starting with red one day, and work your way through the traditional rainbow spectrum on each subsequent day.

Find one thing you can see that is the color you have picked.

Look at it with beginner’s mind, as if you have never seen this thing before.

Note what it is and its size and shape.

Each of my collections is inspired by a full sensory experience.
