How to Cultivate Mindfulness

Be where you are otherwise you might miss your life. - Buddah

We might think we choose what we’re paying attention to in life, but in reality most of us are mindlessly walking through the day like robots, through old patterns, habits and impulses.

For instance, we may be eating dinner – but our mind is worrying about work, or remembering a fight with our spouse – and we find ourselves unconsciously overeating.

The practice of mindfulness can help us access our basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are right now, and what we’re doing.

Mindfulness:

Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally. Mindfulness is the art of intentionally directing our attention to the present, with an attitude of openness, curiosity, and non-judgment. It involves observing our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as they arise, without getting entangled in them. By practicing mindfulness, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, increase our capacity for empathy, and cultivate a sense of inner calm.

Awareness is already here, we just have to access it. Meditation is a way of being.

Luckily it is not overly difficult or complicated to bring in mindfulness. We can create these moments with simple activities that we already do daily – like showering or enjoying a cup of tea. By consciously choosing to focus on a simple activity or task at hand, we slow things down and let ourselves become aware of the process of attending, and perhaps how little control we usually have over it.

We might notice that our mind wanders, and we are constantly distracted by past or future thoughts. By coming back repeatedly to these simple daily tasks, we are cultivating the capacity to focus. And because they are daily chores or actions, we are given these opportunities everyday to practice consistency in directing our attention.

The Beginner’s Mind:

The concept of the beginner’s mind invites us to adopt a mindset of openness and curiosity. It encourages us to let go of preconceived notions and approach every experience as if we were encountering it for the first time, like a child. Embracing the beginner’s mind allows us to break free from habitual patterns of thinking and opens the door to fresh perspectives, new insights, and a heightened sense of wonder. We think we are experts, but our narrowed ideas and notions can imprision us from seeing the whole.

Non-Judgement:

In your awareness, you will become aware of how much you judge with likes and dislikes. The foundation of non-judgement is not about “not judging”, it is more about not judging ourselves for how judgemental we actually are.

Patience:

Noticing how impatient we are, we want to move to the next thing instead of being in the present. “You can’t push the river” It is unwise to push ourselves to “hurry” someplace. Patience is a quality to cultivate, instead of instant gratification and addiction and constant wanting, and never actually satisfied because you are waiting for the next hit of dopamine.

Trust, Safety and Reliable:

Trust in your capacity to be authentic and remind yourself that. Your breath and your heart. Trust the process. Trust yourself.

Non-Striving:

There is nothing to do, nowhere to go, and nothing to attain. Not being attached to the outcome, instead just taking care of the thing done with integrity and presence.

Self Compassion and Forgiveness:

Befrlending yourself

Acceptance:

Seeing things as they are. Clear seeing and action. See ing the reality of what is going on., then taking a pricnipabled stand. Acceptance is recognizing the current reality, and then needing to change, not about being passive. Befrlending yoursel

The Five Senses:

Our five senses—sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch—are powerful gateways to the present moment. By intentionally engaging and sharpening our senses, we can anchor ourselves in the here and now, deepening our connection with the world around us.
